YOSEMITE FALLS

Pam and I hiked up to to the Upper Yosemite Falls overlook for the first time. The hike took us 5 hours and 3 minutes and the distance was approximately 8 miles. We started from the Swinging Bridge parking lot, crossed the Merced River, and headed up. Our breathing was labored due to the altitude and the steep ascent up the 60 switchbacks to Columbia Rock. After a few mountaineer's breaths we were on our way taking in the sights and sounds.

We met very few hikers going up, but going back down was a different story. I almost got clobbered in the face by someone wielding a stick while he was talking to his friend. Another incident occurred when a teenage girl decided to sit down right in front of me because she was too tired. I was so close to falling over her. Some hikers were only carrying one 12-ounce bottle of water for the entire hike. One hiker dipped his water bottle in Yosemite Creek and was warned by other hikers, including myself, of the hazards of giardia. I eventually filtered some water to replenish his 12-ounce bottle. One hiker wore flip flops. Others inquired, "How much further?" Ju

Hike note: This was our first hike without using our trekking poles. Our weightlifting regimen that includes squats, leg extensions and leg curls played a key role in our strength and conditioning for this hike. The day was perfect for a hike. Some cumulus clouds started to form as we finished our hikes. Switchbacks? Too many to count. Next time perhaps I will have a precise number. I would be safe to say that there was at least 150. Trail conditions were ideal as well. No snow on the trail although some snowpack still existed off-trail.

The Merced River has a lot of water flowing.

Down in the valley.

The watch tells just some of the story.
