REEFER MADNESS

Hah, now that I got your attention!

Our new refrigerator arrived today. No more "madness" living out of ice chests! Thank goodness the weather has been cool.

Our old refrigerator headed south on March 18, just before our Wawona camping trip. We didn't know it at the time until we were getting to prepare dinner on March 17.

My wife had taken the salmon out of the freezer, but we were perplexed to the "fishy" smell. We thought there was a small hole in the package when we set out the salmon to thaw.

The next day, my wife asked if I had turned down the freezer. I responded no and we went to investigate. The freezer controls were at maximum cold, but no cold air was coming out.

We opened up the refrigerator door and noticed it was cool but not cold and no cold air was blowing out. The settings were also set a maximum.

Ruh roh.

So we grabbed two of the large ice chests and started dumping things in them. Condiments in one and drinks in another. Perishable goods were placed in the kitchen refrigerator. Yes, we have two fridges. One for our in-laws and one for us. Both of the fridges are ours. We "rent" space for my in-laws!

So now after almost a month, we got our fridge. Not as big as the old one, but it will do. The good folks at Lowe's had a Frigidaire 18.2 cubic foot for $449. Best Buy had the same at $549. The people at Home Depot didn't want our business.

Got a 10% military discount on the price (Home Depot has discounts only on holidays, Lowe's has it for all major appliances 365) and tacked on a 5-year extended warranty. Yes, the warranty may be a big ripoff, but it comforts the soul as well as the hunger pangs. If any spoilage occurs, Lowe's dishes out $250.00 in money to replenish the damaged goods.

The Home Depot charges for delivery and haul away since we don't live in the "Fresno" area. Go figure.

Lowe's had free delivery and haul away. We liked that. That was a no-brainer.

No more bags of ice. I think we went through 140 pounds of ice at about $4.50 per 20 pound bag.

Next up? The water heater. It is about to go, so guess where we are going to buy one?
