Wherever we may roam...

Those numbers above are the roads we travelled on as we made our way towards, up and back the eastern Sierra Nevada.

We "re-did" what we did Memorial Day weekend. Only this time we got more than we bargained for with the weather and took more pictures! 377 in all. Thank you, digital! And this time, I backed it up. Ain't gonna make the same mistake twice.

We started our drive at around 5:00 a.m. We needed to get some gas so we stopped in Coarsegold but all the stations were closed and the pumps inoperable.

Well, we needed gas and some coffee so we drove to Oakhurst and stopped at Vons. It is around 5:25 a.m. and the Vons Store (which has a Starbucks) doesn't open until 6:00 a.m.!!! We then drove over to the Vons gas station hoping the pumps were working although no one was in the station. I for one never knew that Vons' gas pumps still operate during after hours. My wife kept assuring me the pumps work. I pulled up to one of the pumps, inserted my Vons card, then my credit card and voila! It worked! I'll be damned! I even got three cents off per gallon using my Vons card. Oooooooooooooooooooooo...

After gassing up it was off to Yosemite National Park. Luckily the Oakhurst Starbucks was open at 5:30 a.m. So we got our ventis and our scones. I was hoping to get a sausage sandwich but they don't sell it there.

Wherever we went, rain was sure to follow...Yosemite, Mono Lake, Bodie, Bridgeport, Sonora Pass, Lee Vining. Rain mixed with a little thunder and a little snow at Sonora Pass.

Yosemite Valley overlook. We had the whole place to ourselves. As we were getting ready to leave, four cars pulled up into the parking lot.

As were were driving past Lembert Dome, I came upon a Park Ranger, who apparently pulled out from Tuolumne Meadows Lodge. I didn't know it was a Park Ranger until I mentioned something to Pam and came upon the pickup adorned with its blue and red lights. About two minutes, the ranger pulls over to the side to allow me to pass. We are driving along just doing the speed limit, when the ranger hit the lights. I pulled over and looked at Pam and wondered what this was about. To make a long story short, the ranger said he clocked me at 54 mph when I came upon him. True, I was speeding up until that point. Anyhow, I got off with just a warning. Lucky me.

This is where I got my "warning." Pam took this magnificent picture.

We arrive in Bodie around 9:20 a.m. The crowds were WAY DOWN from Memorial Day weekend. Since we already knew what pictures we wanted to re-take, we hit the town by walking at a brisk pace. Bodie is at 8,375 feet so we had to applying mountaineering breathing techniques to recover quickly from the lack of oxygen.

These are just some of the pictures we took...

There is just something we like about this picture.

For comparison purposes only...

Just check out the lions on this billiard table.

One-armed bandit.

How many horseshoes were made?

I wonder what the coffee tasted like?

The "Earth Friendly" house on Green Street.

At the top of this hill is a grave marker overlooking the town of Bodie.

And this is the person who it belongs to...All I know so far is that Warren Loose sued someone over a colt from a racehorse. He searched for a place to be interred and settled for the top of the hill above the cemetery for everyone to see his grave as they entered or left town.

Web drippings. Now, that is old stuff!

The man the town is named after.

The town prostitute. She was not interred within the confines of the cemetery. Guess she wasn't worthy.

Ground chocolate anyone?

It is here that Pam inserted the Bob Seger CD and the song "Roll Me Away" blared out of the speakers.

"Took a look down a westbound road,
Right away I made my choice
Headed out to my big four-wheeler,
I was tired of my own voice
Took a bead on the northern plains
And just rolled that power on..."

After Bodie, it was off to Sonora Pass. We decided to stop in Bridgeport to get a bite to eat. We head into Rhino's and sit down and we wait...and we wait...and we waited. Now the place is not that busy. We waited...we waited. Okay, that's enough. We go across the streed to the Sportsman Inn. Less crowded and the service was great.

We drive up the 395 to the 108 crossing and head up to the pass. We go beyond the summit and descend on the western side since Pam wanted to take a picture of a waterfall we happened upon the last time we were here. We head back up to the summit and the rain, snow and thunder make their presence felt.

"Can you like hurry up and take the damn picture before I get struck by lightning?" A loud thunderclap went off just when Pam took this picture. Scared the beejeezus out of both of us. Note the words "SLOW TRUCK" on the top of the 108. It is not on the other sign.

The hot springs south of the 108 and 395 junction. Oops, forgot to change from monochrome to color.

On the 395 just west of Bridgeport. What serenity.

We spend the night in Lee Vining. On the horizon, a storm is looming just above the lake and moving towards us. We stop at Bodie Mike's to grab a bite to eat and the rains came down. They had a problem with cooking Pam's salmon dinner. Apparently the cooks were used to cooking with farm-raised salmon and just happened they decided to cook with wild salmon this particular evening. The proprietor kept coming back and telling us they were having difficulty cooking the salmon. Kept falling apart. They finally got it right and told us the salmon dinner was no charge. We did leave a good tip. Note to self: Order salmon next time.

On Sunday, May 31, Pam and I walk the Lee Vining Creek Trail. After having breakfast at Nicely's, it was time to conclude our trip with our drive up Tioga Pass through Yosemite and then home. Happened to be that the proprietor from last night was working the morning shift as well. We joked about there wasn't any salmon on the breakfast menu.

Tuolumne River overfloweth.

We get to Tuolumne Meadows and lo and behold there was another Park Ranger facing in the opposite direction off to the side in between the numerous cars near the Cathedral Peaks trailhead. We get to Olmsted Point and it starts to pour, but it was only for a short while.

We stopped at a roadside waterfall near White Wolf...

Then stopped to take some pictures of a blonde black bear resting in a meadow near Crane Flat...

There is a blonde black bear in here somewhere...If you click and enlarge the photo the bear is just a light brown speck between the upright and leaning pine trees.

IN THE BEGINNING...

On the first day, God created the dog and said: "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of 20 years."

The dog said: "That's a long time to be barking. How about only 10 years and I'll give you back the other 10?"

God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said:

"Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a 20-year life span.'

The monkey said: "Monkey tricks for 20 years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back 10 like the dog did?

God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said: "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you a life span of 60 years."

The cow said: "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for 60 years! How about 20 and I'll give back the other 40?"

God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created humans and said: "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you 20 years."

But the human said: "Only 20 years? Could you possibly give me my 20, plus the 40 the cow gave back, plus the 10 the monkey gave back, and plus the 10 the dog gave back? That makes 80, okay?"

"Okay," answered God, "You asked for it. You got it."

That is why for our first 20 years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves.

For the next 40 years we slave in the sun to support our family.

For the next 10 years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren.

For the last 10 years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life...live it!

Have fun...

A LA ANDY ROONEY

So I get this letter in the mail from Chevrolet.

On the front is the trademark Chevrolet "bowtie" and "CHEVY" in the upper left corner of the envelope.

On the upper right "Presorted First-Class Mail U.S. Postage Paid General Motors."

On the back, "P.O. box 909978, Milwaukee, WI 53209."

Down on the bottom are "375612:S01A P00004 0001** -P01054 3817 A." Guess it must be some routing info.

Now in the front they can't even spell my name right! CHEEZITS GRIPES!

Well, the letter is on "nice" letterhead. Has a nice feel to it. Strathmore texture. It has the "fake" signature. Guess Ed Peper, North America Vice President, Chevrolet, doesn't want to sign it personally, so he spells my name wrong.

Anyhow, the letter goes to say...
"For nearly 10 decades..."
Can't they say "For nearly 100 years..." ?

Blah blah blah
"...As everyone knows these are turbulent times...Chevrolet is focues on being your car company...committed to fulfilling your transportation needs in sales and service...both now and in the future..."
Can't even spell my name right.

Blah blah blah
"...we are reengineering our showroom - with cars like our award-winning Malibu...with America's Best Truck, Silverado...with the newest star in family vehicles, the 8-passenger Traverse...and twith the 21st century sports car, Camaro..."
Yep, they are reengineering their showrooms all right...Closing 1,100 of the dealerships. Now that's "reengineering."

Blah blah blah
"...Our 2010 Equinox will head to your local Chevy dealer this summer..."
Equinox means "equal night." Why not Solstice? Wait! Solstice is a Pontiac. Pontiac is history. Is there a seasonal connection?

Blah blah blah
"...two more exciting products are scheduled to begin production next year - first is the awesome new Cruze, our new entry in the Compact Car segment...Then, we will begin production of the Chevy Volt, the world's first Extended-Range Electric Vehicle. Volt is tomorrow's hope for an energy-challenged world...and the embodiment of the new Chevrolet. And all thes new products are just the beginning..."
What are those cars I see on the road that look no bigger than my backpack? The Smart Fortwo looks like if it had a head-on collision with a grasshopper it would lose! Okay, so they are "green," but are they safe? Cruze will become "Cruzhed" and Volt will become "Whatt."

Blah blah blah
"...we deeply appreciate your business. I'll stay in touch on all the happenings at Chevrolet. In the meantime, if you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact Chevy Customer Service at cac@chevrolet.com..."
Maybe Ed "Doctor" Peper will correctly spell my name on the next series of correspondence.

Blah blah blah
"...we look forward to celebrating our centennial with you in 2011."
Gosh, I can't wait for 01-01-11. Once the largest employer of over 618,000 now just around 88,000. When is the world going to end according to the Mayan calendar? 12-21-12.

As the late Bob Hope would sing, "Thanks for the memories..."

Wait!

Bob Hope endorsed Dodge and Chrysler.

There is a connection here somewhere...

LO(O)SE (THE) CHANGE

One of my small goals months ago was to empty out the change jar.

After constant visits to Starbucks and Whole Foods, gone are all the pennies, nickels, dimes. FINALLY!

I have saved the quarters for last since you can use them for laundry, showers, and car washes when out hiking, campin and driving.

Life...live it.

Have fun.

PHOTO (O)OPS!

After all the hours and weekends preparing for the opening of the new Social Security Administration office, I decided she needed to be "kidnapped."

So on Saturday, May 23, we left home at 7:14 a.m. and drove down to Fresno and stopped at Whole Foods to have breakfast. As we sat and ate our breakfast burritos, I called my in-laws and left a voicemail message to negotiate a "ransom," but I they didn't reply to my call. Now, this is their daughter we are talking about!

We drove up the 99 to Manteca. Holiday traffic was considerably light. We opted to take the 120 East instead of the 108 through Modesto.

We hit bumper-to-bumper along the way. Oakdale was a bad traffic jam where the 120 and 108 meet. Figures. EVERYONE IS GOING TO YOSEMITE, RIGHT?! At least we hoped since we were headed in the "other" direction. We went beyond the turnoff, went down a couple city streets and got back on 108.

We made it passed Sonora without further traffic.

We stop at Sonora Pass for some photo opportunities and to walk on the snow. On the ride down, we stopped at the Marine Corps Mountain Warefare Training Center, then drove down and spent the night in Bridgeport. We have dinner at Rhino's and then retire for the evening.

The sign of the times in Bridgeport is "For Sale." A couple of eating establishments in town are for sale, Bridgeport Inn and the Jolly Kone.

On Sunday, May 24, we gassed up at the Shell station. Gas was $3.499 per gallon for regular unleaded! I wonder if the gas price "spiked" due to the Memorial Day weekend?

We ate an early breakfast at the Bridgeport Inn and headed over to Bodie State Park for three hours, before the holiday crowds came. What a place.

We then headed to Lee Vining and stopped to get a cup of coffee and then it was up Tioga Road through Yosemite National Park. Quite a bit of snow near the east entrance. The Tuolumne Campground and Grill was still closed.

In two days, we took a lot of pictures. Sonora Pass, Bridgeport, Bodie, Yosemite. All beautiful pictures.

On Monday, May 25, we wanted to show our family the pictures of our trip. I got everything hooked up and ready to go. I wanted to eliminate the "border" stuff so I referred to the manual. I didn't see anything so I went to FORMAT. Hit OK and ...

Gone.

All pictures...

Gone.

"NO IMAGE"

Say what?

Cannot "UNDO." Ain't no "UNDO" button or function.

What I did was done.

$h!+.
(Plus other expletives of my choosing! )

I didn't read the fine print. Well, I only saw what I wanted to see.

Oh, well.

Once before, never again.

This weekend we are retracing our route in the opposite direction.

We will go through Yosemite National Park via Tioga Pass, then stop at Bodie for pictures (we know what shots we want), then head up to Bridgeport and up to Sonora Pass and turn around and probably stop in Bridgeport again.

We can leave Friday night and car camp somewhere in YNP or we can leave early Saturday morning.

I think Friday night would be more exciting.
