They are still a handful, but we love them.

They will be treated to pig's ears from Costco and their favorite beverage...water!

They look so cute in this photo.

HAPPY 240th BIRTHDAY!

40 YEARS LATER...

The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald...

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee."
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty,
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the "Gales of November" came early.

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin.
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned,
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland.
And later that night when the ship's bell rang,
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
And a wave broke over the railing.
And ev'ry man knew, as the captain did too
'Twas the witch of November come stealin'.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the Gales of November came slashin'.
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind.

When suppertime came the old cook came on deckSayin' "Fellas, it's too rough t'feed ya."
At seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in; he said,
(**2010 lyric change: At 7 p.m., it Grew dark, it was then he said,)
"Fellas, it's bin good t'know ya!"
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril.
And later that night when 'is lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
They may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams;
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
with the Gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
In the "Maritime Sailors' Cathedral."
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee."
"Superior," they said, "never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early!"

ONE YEAR LATER

It has been a year since I lost my "second mom."

Her family has not kept in touch with me since I was unable to attend the funeral due to company policy in regards to "immediate family."

It doesn't matter anyway, life goes on...we got ours and they have theirs.

NEAR BEAR...

When we first saw the house, I couldn't help but notice bear scat around the property and adjacent. We have heard reports of bears in the area.
We have seen evidence of their destruction in large trash receptacles. We have seen our first bear.

Last night just before midnightn the dogs alerted us. At first, I thought it was just a deer underneath the south patio. Out of the corner of my eye, something moved in the moonlit darkness near the trash receptacle.

I grabbed my flashlight and saw two glowing eyes.

I yelled to scare it off and was successful in that endeavor.

A couple of hours later, the dogs alerted us again. It had returned to the scene of the crime.

I grabbed my truck keys and started it up in hoping to shine my lights on it and sound my horn.

As soon as my lights came on, the bear scampered off into the ravine.

A lesson learned. I will have to wait until the morning of trash day to set out everything, and I will have to devise a locking mechanism to keep the bear from doing that again.

Well, we have seen grey foxes, bobcats, deer, and now, a bear.

"TWORKING" BEGINS...

Today is my wife's first day working from home.

She said it was awkward at first. She was cold due to the house being a bit chilly this morning.

Aunt C and TheOs stopped by.

She made chicken chili and chicken pasta.

Yes, it was a stressful day for my wife.☺

But, she....

Had fun.

6IX MONTHS LATER...

Sasha and Drake have been with us now for six months.

A lot of changes have occurred since April 9.

Each dog has its unique personality. When Sasha wants to go out when we are in bed, she comes over and licks my hand. Whenever she wants back in, she emits a small bark. When she wants something, she chomps her teeth. Drake is territorial and will bark at anyone or anything that comes near us.

My wife is able to discern their barks. I cannot.

They are happy dogs and we are happy they are a major part of our lives. They love to play soccer and fetch. Quite a duo.

Their first birthday is coming up on December 7. I think rib bones, chewy toys, and dog treats are in order for that special day...

XXX YEARS

California Republic...my home for the last 30 years...on this date...

On our way to work we spotted a black/brown bear while driving south on Highway 41 near the 25-mile marker at the 2,000 foot level. It came on to the highway from the right, then stopped in the middle of the road, and then darted up an embankment on the left. Dang, we didn't have our cameras at the ready. This is the first bear we have seen at this elevation and so close to any residential area.

Last week, our neighbors have said there may be a bear in our neighborhood. No confirmation of sightings, but there is bear scat down in the ravine adjacent to our property and theirs.

Will have to be extra careful when we let our dogs out at night. I am sure they will be okay since they are quick to alert us whenever they detect strange noises.

Life is definitely good up here.

OREGONORGONE?

My wife had an opportunity to relocate to the City of Roses.

After weighing the pros and cons, we felt it was best to stay put and finish up with the renovations on our home.

It was tempting to move just one more time, but it wasn't economically feasible. We didn't want to be burdened with a mortgage payment as we draw near to retirement.

Who knows, another opportunity like this will arise. When that happens, we will put the house up for sale, look at property in the Beaver State or the Evergreen State, and start all over again, and hopefully the real estate we purchase will give us our "retirement heaven."

Gone to Oregon...?

Will soon see...

JULY 4th 1st

For the first time in my life, I went camping during the July 4th weekend at the Aspen campground outside of Lee Vining with my wife and stepson, KC, and his girlfriend, EriKa.

The new Coleman two-burner propane stove we purchased at Wal-Mart worked great. We had a white gas stove but we needed an upgrade.

The screened shelter we purchased at Big 5 worked well to keep the bugs at bay.

Our camping condominium, the REI Hobitat, provided us the room and comfort to "get away from it all" but still have some creature comfort.

We forgot some items: a can opener (I swear it was in the camping gear), the stand alone propane burner to heat water while the food cooked on the stove.

We couldn't purchase firewood in Oakhurst due to the restrictions imposed by Cal Fire. We managed to purchase two boxes of Hotwood in Mariposa.

Our fireworks show at Site 16 comprised of a campfire and smores. Earlier in the day, we treated ourselves to a bowl of ice cream in Lee Vining.

For dinner we has chili over corn chips along with fresh wild onions we picked near Tioga Lake. We also had chili hot dogs. It was deelish!

We also went fishing on July 4th, but not a bite. Lee Vining Creek at the dam was low and Tioga Lake was low, too. Doggone drought.

Unfortunately, we felt it was not the right time to bring the dogs. We didn't feel like tethering them to the picnic bench during the night because we didn't want them to soil around the bench or to untangle them in the middle of the night.

For breakfast on July 5, we were surprised to crack open four eggs and saw this...

Yes, we all had fun.
